View Full Version : A final yenc thought.

Russell, declaring I'm a loser was uncalled for. Resizing is not the
issue it's the method of posting that this discussion is about. Yenc
posts is a smaller size file eliminating the need use a second program to
resize the file.
You make it so simple, I should use multiple programs but you shouldn't
have to. Where is the logic in that?
The controversy over yenc is the belief that more software is needed to
view a file. That is true if you want to keep your current software and
software that decodes yenc as well. Apparently I didn't make myself
clear, yenc decodes like OE and more.
When I mentioned upgrading I was referring to using software that would
decode picture files across a greater array of file extensions and
transfer techniques than what you may be currently using. I wasn't
implying that "more" software was needed, only that a variety of
software is available which decodes 99% of pictures posted today.
The updated readers (probably a better choice of words) eliminates the
need to have multiple programs. Yenc downloads and decodes picture files
that are not yenc as well.
What I see as the real controversy, is that a declared majority on this
NG are comfortable with their software and don't want to update/upgrade
(you pick) it. I have no argument with that at all. What I was pointing
out, is there comes a time when a newer, more developed technique comes
along.
If you would rather fly a Cessna 152 rather than a Lear Jet because the
152 is simpler to operate then a very respected choice has been made. On
the other hand when certain constraints have been placed on you such as
distance over a given time frame, then the other choice is obviously just
as respectable.
Woody, your solution to yenc posters is just to stick them in the
killfile. Nobody is trying to dictate what you should use. If you don't
want to see my pictures "only" because I post with yenc then you deprive
yourself. I loose no sleep over it.
Ray O'Hara, you made more sense with your reply than anyone else.
> why should i add another program? i don't killfile yenc-ers to be rude
  but just to remove clutter.
You can't ask for more honesty than that. I just wish others who don't
like yenc would be a bit more tolerant. Others try to make a point with
lying, name calling and being belligerent. That's what irritates me.
> why should i waste space on my machine for a program i don't want, and
which forces me to download several posts to a special folder and
> combine them just to see one picture?
I too have seen posts where a single jpg picture file gets put in a
folder and can not be decoded unless you do what you mentioned. I agree
100%, they are a pain to view and I simply pass them up. Those files
however, are not expressly yenc. They are simply posted in a manner our
readers are not familiar with.
> the truth is , if you want people to see your stuff put it in a format
> they will use.
I almost agree with you on that issue. I have a limitation on what I can
post & view each month. The news service is free with my access plan.
Yenc makes it possible to use the service without keeping score. I can't
keep everyone happy.
Personally, I think what irritates non-yenc users the most, is that you
might not always be aware your opening a yenc file. When they realize
what happened it's to late.
> its an unmoderated group. so there are no rules, just custom. so feel
> free to post in yenc, but also expect to be killfiled by many of us who
> don't use it. it's nothing personal,
You're the first person to admit it and I admire your candor, thank you.
I have no problem with others putting me in a killfile. Again, not all
things are for all people.
I'm not a hugh poster. I may only upload a few pictures a week to some
weeks with no pictures. Beware that I will ignore all flames.
Anyone here can email me directly if they want to continue this topic.
Just ask for my email address. I was putting in my four and a half cents
worth as my personal observation. This group needs to post pictures, not
rhetoric. I will not be adding anymore to this thread.
This message was posted with Xnews. No other news reader was killed or

if you like yenc then use it. and those of us who don't use it will
killfile you to clean up the message log.
using yenc doesn't make you a bad person and you will not be killfiled
because i think you an asshole, its because i don't want yenc.
i don't need another program. nor do i wish to replace the ones i already
use.
you yenc guys are like moonies trying to spread the word.
face it, if you post the coolest picture ever in yenc, and nobody sees it,
well then its our loss right.

Post as you see fit. Let the anti-yenk(ers) eat bytes.

the group is called alt.BINARIES.PICTURES.aviation and not
alt.NOYENC.pictures.aviation so if it is binaries and pictures of aviation
then post it if those opposed to your binaries can't decode then like I had
to back in the dark ages I found what I needed to decode posts in this or
any other NG. Don't let the fascist anti-yenc gang push you around just put
a header on the post to at least give a clue to what you post

Amazing...
Almost 30 words without a coma. Whew and I though my typed punctuation was
bad! Kind of interesting how when I organized the last vote on yEnc I
never forced, bullied or name called those who I disagreed with. Nor for
that matter did I scream or throw fits when I couldn't have my own way...
Before you argue, walk in the others shows first. It will give you a
perspective that strengthens your own arguments in the eyes of others,
teaches you compassion for your opponent, helps to understand ALL the
perspectives and ultimately enables you to win the debate. Blind arrogance
and ridiculous name calling only takes away your validity and weakens your
position in the eyes of your rivals....
There again what do I know? I am from the un-enlightened evil Fascist Anti
yEnc Camp that lingers in the dark ages...

Looks like you've succeeded in "Yenc'ing" everybodys chain.
Such passion - like the Jehovah ladies at my door proclaiming my doom to
damnation!
Lets fuel the fire:
Are Yenc'ers Democrats or Republicans?
..or shall we just hose it down like I did to the nice ladies that wouldn't

As I see it, there is no way of forcing you to not post Yenc. If you do so,
that's your own decision.
But why you want to argue your point is lost on me. Obviously you want to
show your photos otherwise you wouldn't bother
arguing your point. Yet you don't want to accept that some people just don't
want to meddle in yenc.
I'm not sure what is more pointless. arguing your point or persisting in
showing to a market that just isn't there and just doesn't care.
Trying to belittle the non yenc voters on this group is also not going to
help your point of view.

Hello,
My newsreader has native yEncoding support so I don't really have a
dog in this fight. But that's no reason to keep my two-bit opinion to
myself, now is it?
I figure it's the poster's call to make, and if I want the posts, it's
my responsibility to do what it takes to get them. If you don't want
to adopt yEncoding support, well that's your choice to make.
It's just that people are complaining about free stuff and I've yet to
see a dignified way to do that.
Besides, how often do you get to capitalize the second letter of a
word and have it be grammatically correct? Admit it, it's exciting.

Like I have said before I don't post using yeanc however, My newsreader
does read yenc. If you believe that you should impose your narrow minded
approach to yenc on all other the you might be a fascist anti-yencer.
YOU are the one who started all this by flaming someone who shares and just
happens to post with yenc. So how adult is attacking a poster if YOU have
never shared any pics with the group. Go back to being just another lurker
and don't criticise 'til you share you pics with others!!

As you being one who posts more than most here I thank you for all the
great images. As to the yenc-no yenc debate it is up to the poster and if I
don't want to download yenc I won't bitch at those who post Since my news
reader does decode the point is moot.
I digress. I just again want to thank you and envy thye fact that you are
in a place to get so many great shot.

Seems to me the rules state that posting should not be yNec on this news
group
But I have been wrong before, and will be again (soon).
So why not just start your own news group for yNec only posting and avoid

Clairbear,
As you have plonked me odds are good you won't be able to read this; however
on the off chance that someone should forward it to you...
There has never been any rules in the conventional form. However a few
years ago with the help of MANY others I compiled a guide for this NG. This
guide took the better part of three months to compile another month to
eventually vote on. During this process the lurkers where strongly
encouraged to step out of the shadows for the purpose it's suggestion
compilation and eventual vote. Many did so in both the NG and in a few
dozen E-mails sent to my self and various other participants. Quite a few
people voiced concerns, some with open aggression, some with very polite and
very strong counter arguments. However a great many others where openly
supportive of the idea of a guide, and so with what seemed like a 1000 plus
corrections and about 50 drafts later it came to a vote. Though I do not
remember how many voted, over all the participants of the group voted
overwhelming for it. On thing I should point out is that the entire process
was about as transparent as we could make it. Granted there may have been a
couple who cheated and voted more than once, however what we could do to
make the process transparent we did. One of the more interesting things
that came about from the guide was the number of lurkers who stepped out of
the shadows to pass comment and offer suggestions. Many of which where
incorporated into the guide...
For a couple of years the guide was mirrored on both my website, and
several others including translations in to French and German. Then about
two years ago for a number of personal reasons I had to basically slow down
and drop into the roll of lurker. At about this time I also dropped the
guide, however it did linger and stayed quite healthy for about another
year. These days though I am a participant in the group, I no longer have
the time, nor the desire to be involved with the guide. So if others should
decide to champion the cause they are more than welcome. However be warned
to any and all it is not for the faint at heart.
As for your situation...
Your sin has been your comments towards others, and the erratic on again,
off again hostility. Which is why you have found yourself on the defensive,
and also why so many people have flamed you. The really sad part is that
your behavior right up to and including that batch of images you posted has
been predicted. Because unfortunately I, and I am willing to bet a great
many others have seen it so many times before.
My best advise to you if you want to earn the respect of your colleagues in
the group is to lay low for a little while, and let the flames cool down...
Then out of no where post a WELL EDITED batch of your favorite aviation
images, not a huge batch just maybe 15 to 20 of the best you can do, and see
what happens. Then a few days or a week or two later do an encore. Quality
counts for a hell of lot in this newsgroup, and posters who post quality
images on a fairly regular basis gain points pretty quick. People who shout
a lot without anything behind them quickly lose points.
Clairbear please believe me when I say this I bare you no malice and I HAVE
NOT posted this for my benefit. Nor am I am attempting to be either
condescending or insulting. If you accept and listen to my suggestions
wonderful, if you do not then that is your choice. Because in the end it
really doesn't matter to me, however if you follow my advise and think about
what I have said, I think you may find things to be much easier for you.
The group is supposed to be fun, and not about hostility.
As a peace offering and as you seem to like skydivers, I have attached such
an image from my files,
Good Luck,
Andrew

The musing of one of the better poster in this Ng are a nice guide but as
he states it not the law, just a set of suggestions foe behavior. Those who
flame others for posting in yenc or as your insulting posts about my
posting and that of others are just as much in violation of these
guidelines as the yEnc posters. So maybe We should examine our behaviors
before attacking that of others.

I am a professional Photgrapher and videographer Myself and I love all the
new tech and the options that they give I was one of the first to get the
new Adobe CS3 software and I use it everyday and as for this whole yenc
issue, if somewants to use to post fine, if not fine, but I can and will dl
yenc files if they are posted.
As I see it the biggest problem with yEnc is all the unnecessary flaming
that goes on over it's use. RAR and Zip files are fine for multiumedia
posts. Pics don't need to be compressed using them. As for the KISS
principle No-one(aside from Steve Jobs Or Bill Gates) ever said anything
with computers and digital technology would be simple.
My philosophy is poster should post as much "orginal" content as possible
and avoid needless repetes of tired old stuff unless by special request.
That being said Have anice day
Here one for you
